One day, the king was sitting with the minister when the minister let out a sigh. The king smiled. The minister thought that he should trick the king, so by chance, one day the king asked the minister if pearls could be produced. The minister replied that of course they could, but it would cost ten thousand rupees! The king immediately gave the minister ten thousand rupees. Taking it home, he tilled a patch of land and sowed barley. When the barley grew and began to thrive, it started to sprout pearls.
The minister went to the king and said, “Your Majesty, the pearls are now ready to be harvested, so they should be gathered!” The king, with all his pomp and grandeur, went to harvest the pearls early in the morning. Seeing the pearls on the barley, the king asked how pearls were to be harvested. The minister replied that only a person who had never let out a sigh could harvest pearls. The king began to inquire who had never sighed. However, no such person could be found. The king then sent a man to the queen to ask whether she had ever sighed. The man went and asked the queen. The queen replied that the king was completely foolish. She said that he had quarreled with the minister, and the minister was tricking him. The man returned to the king and relayed everything that the queen had said. Upon hearing this, the king silently felt embarrassed and returned home.
