The story revolves around a poor man, referred to as Baba, who seeks food and ends up in a series of encounters that lead to unexpected outcomes. After receiving help from a woman named Satua, Baba, while resting in a tree, encounters seven demons. He convinces them that he is their brother, Bhokas, and they gift him a bull to help him survive.However, Baba is later confronted by five thieves who trick him into giving up the bull. Desperate, he returns to the demons for help. One of the demons disguises herself as a beautiful woman to deceive the thieves and reclaim the bull by marrying their old father, subsequently taking revenge on the thieves by brutalizing him and returning the bull to Baba.
In the end, Baba disguises himself as a healer to extract the thieves' hidden treasures before killing the old man, leading to a moral lesson where the thieves abandon their life of crime. The story conveys themes of cleverness, deception, and the consequences of greed.
एगो बाबा जी हलन । ऊ बड़ा गरीब हलन। उनकर मेहरारू कहलन कि जा कहीं दूसर जगुन कमा-खा गन। बाबा जी राह के कलेवा ला कुछ माँगलन तो जव के सतुआ पंडिताइन बाँध देलन। बाबा जी लेके चललन, जाइत-जाइत एगो पक्का के कुआँ मिलल, उहाँ पर बाबा जी नेहा के खा लेलन । खाके आगे चललन तो जाइत-जाइत बीच ढाब में साँझ हो गेल। अब रात में जाय कहाँ, से ओहिजे एगो पीपर के पेड़ पर चढ़ गेलन ।
ऊ पिपरा पर सात गो राकस रह हलन, जे कनहूँ घूमे गेलन हल । ऊ सब भी साँझ खानी पहुँच गेलन । देखलन कि हम्मर घर में के तो एगो आउ आयल हे घ् ओकरा से रकसवन पूछलक कि तू कउन हे? बाबा जी पूछलन कि तू कउन हे? तब ओहनियों बोलल कि हमनी राकस ही। तब बाबा जी कहलन कि हम राकस के भाई भोकस ही । रकसवन पूछलक कि तोर दाँत कइसन हऊ । रकसवन नीचे हल से बाबा जी ऊपरे से लोटा गिरा देलन आउ कहलन कि देख दाँत ! लोटा गिरल से एगो राकस के मुँह पर लगल। बाबा जी ऊपरे से डोरी भी गिरवलन आउ कहलन कि एकरे में बान्हबउ । तब रकसवन कहलन कि अपने के ही, ठीक-ठीक बताऊ, हमनी अपने के गुरु मानइत ही । तब ऊ कहलन कि अपने का चाहइत ही ? बाबाजी कहलन कि कुछो दे देऽ । रकसवन उनका एगो बैल दे देलक आउ कहलक कि एही से तूं कमइहऽ खइहऽ।
बाबाजी उहाँ से बैल लेके चललन । रास्ता में पाँच गो चोर मिलल। एगो बाप आउ ओकर चार गो बेटा । ओखनी पाँचों एक-एक माइल पर खड़ा हल । पहिले बुढ़वा मिलल आउ पूछलक कि बाबा जी, बैला के बेचबऽ ? बाबाजी कहलन कि तीन सौ रोपेया लेबवऽ । एकरा पर बुढ़वा चोर कहलक कि तीस रोपेया में देवऽ ? बाबा जी कहलन कि न देबवऽ, आउ आगे बढ़ गेलन । दोसर चोर फिन मिलल तो ओहूँ पचीस रोपेया देवे लगल बाकि बाबा जी न देलन । फिन आगे बढ़लन तो तेसर चोर पन्दरह रोपेया देवे लगल बाकि बाबा जी न देलन । आगे चौथा चोर मिलल आउ दस रोपेया देवे लगलए ओकरो न देलन। आगे बढ़लन त पाँचवाँ चोर मिलल । ऊ पाँच रोपेया में बैल माँगलक बाकि बाबा जी ओकरो न देल चाहलन । तब उहाँ पाँचों चोर जमा हो गेलन आउ बाबा जी के मार-पीट के बैल छीन लेलन । बाबा जी फिन लौट के रकसवा भीर गेलन आउ ओकरा से राह के सारा हाल कह सुनौलन । एकरा में से एगो चलाक राकस हल । ऊ कहलक कि ''तू घरे जा, हम बैल लेके आवऽ हिवऽ। साथे रोपेया-पइसा भी ले-ले अबवऽ।'’ बाबा जी घरे चल अयलन।
चलँकहाँ राकस उहाँ से चलल आउ सुन्नर अउरत के रूप में जंगल में रोवे लगल । चोर अवाज सुन के पहुँचलन। अपने सब लगलन लड़े कि ''हम बिआह करम, हम बिआह करम।'’ तब औरतिया कहलक कि बुढ़वे से हम सादी करम आउ तोहनी सब के माय बन के सेवा करबउ आउ बुढ़उ के भी सेवा करवउ । तब बुढ़वे से सादी हो गेल और ऊ ओकरा घरे ले आयल। मेहरुआ बेटवन से कहलक कि तोहनी कमा गन, अब बुढ़ारी में ई का कमैथुन ! चारों बेटा कमाय चल गेलन, आउ बुढ़वा घर ही में रह गेल। तब अउरतिया राकस हो गेल । आउ बुढ़वा के मार के हाथ-गोड़ तोड़ देलक आउ बैल लेके चल देलक। ऊ बैल बाबा जी ही पहुँचा आयल।
फिन ''नट बइद'' बन के आयल, बोलल कोय के टूटा-फूटा अंग इया दरद हो तो मरम्मत करा ले। बुढ़वा के बेटवन ओकरा अप्पन बाप भीर लिया गेल । बइद जी कहलन कि तोहनी चारो चार दने से जड़ी कुबार के ले आवऽ । चारो चल गेलन तो बइदवा पूछलक कि बताव तोर माल कहाँ रखल हऊ । बुढ़वा बता देलक । बुढ़वा के जान से मार के ऊ कुआँ में डाल देलक आउ सब माल ले के बाबा जी हीं जा के दे देलक । राकस फिर अप्पन पीपर ओला घर में आ गेलक । ऊ दिन से ऊ सब चोरन के चोरी के आदते छूट गेल ।
Once a Baba lived. He was very poor. His wife told him to go somewhere else to earn food. Baba asked for some food on the way, and a woman named Satua tied it up for him. Baba took it and as he was going, he found a solid well and rested there to eat. After eating, he continued and it became evening on the way. Now, where to go at night, so he climbed up a peepal tree.
On that peepal tree, there were seven demons who were wandering around. They also reached in the evening. They saw that another person had come to their home and asked the demons who they were. Baba asked them who they were, and they replied that they were demons. Baba said that he was the brother of the demons, Bhokas. The demons asked him what his teeth were like. Since the demons were below, Baba dropped a pot on them from above and said, "Look at the teeth!" The pot fell and hit one of the demons on the mouth. Baba then also dropped a rope from above and said, "I will tie you with this." The demons then said, "You tell the truth; we consider you our guru." Then he asked Baba what he wanted. Baba said to give him something. The demons gave him a bull and said, "With this, you will earn and eat."
Baba took the bull and continued on his way. On the way, he encountered five thieves - an old man and his four sons. They were standing one mile apart from each other. First, he met the old man, who asked, "Baba, are you selling the bull?" Baba replied that he would take three hundred rupees for it. The old thief said he would give thirty rupees. Baba said he wouldn't accept it and moved on. Then he met the second thief, who offered twenty-five rupees, but Baba refused. Then he met the third thief, who offered fifteen rupees, but Baba still refused. After that, the fourth thief came and offered ten rupees, but Baba rejected him too. Finally, he met the fifth thief who asked for the bull for five rupees, but Baba also refused him. Then all five thieves gathered, beat Baba, and took the bull from him. Baba then went back to the demons and told them everything that had happened on the way. One of the clever demons said, "You go home, and I will bring back the bull, along with some money." Baba then went home.
The demon then transformed into the form of a beautiful woman and began to cry in the forest. The thieves, upon hearing the voice, came running. They began to quarrel among themselves, saying, "I will marry her, I will marry her." Then the woman said that she would marry the old man and would serve all of them as a mother, and even take care of the old man. So, she married the old man and took him home. The old man told his sons to earn money, saying that now in old age, what would he earn! All four sons went out to earn, leaving the old man at home. Then the woman turned into a demon, beat the old man, broke his hands and legs, and took the bull. The bull then returned to Baba.
Then Baba came back disguised as a "nat" (a performer) and said that if anyone had broken or hurt limbs, they could be mended. The old man's sons brought the old man to him. The performer asked them to bring a healing herb from four different directions. Once they went, the performer asked the old man where he had hidden his belongings. The old man told him. The performer killed the old man and threw him into the well, taking all the belongings back to Baba. Since that day, the thieves gave up their habit of stealing.
