आज से बड़ी दिन बीत गेल, दिल्ली, सहर में एगो भारी राजा रहऽ हलथी । राजा जी के बेटा बड़ी बढ़िया सुन्नर जवान हो गेलथिन हल। एक दिन ऊ सैर करे ला निकललन तो घूमते-घूमते बड़ी दूर के गाँव में चल गेलथिन। ऊ गाँव में का देखलन कि एगो मेहतर के बेटी अप्पन दुहारी पर खड़ा हे, जेकरा से बिजुली के समान अंजोर फैलल हेय । लड़की के देख के राजा के लइका तो ओहिजे बेहोस होके गिर गेलन । राजा के बेटा के ओइसन हालत देख के भीड़ लग गेल । जब राजा के बेटा के होस भेल तो कहे लगलन कि- हमरा के कछुओ न भेल। हमहूँ परेम बान से होइली घायल । हमर पिंजरा के सुगना के लगलई कठोर बान । दवा पर लगइली आस । ओही निकलिहँऽ बान । हमरा के ओही दरुआ पिलावऽ जेकरा कारन भेली हम घायल।

एतना बेयान सुनते सब लोग जान गेलन कि राजा के बेटा मेहतर के बेटी पर आसिक हो गेलन हे । अब तो सब लोग समझावे लगलन कि- भाय, देखऽ तू तो राजा के बेटा ह5, ऊँच कुल के हऽ, आउ ई लड़की तो चान्डाल खानदान मेहतर के हेय । एकरा मोहब्बत में रउआ ना फँसूँ । देखूँ बाबू, ई धन, जवानी, मोहब्बत आउ मेहमान, चारों चार दिन के खातिर आवऽ हथन आउ फिन चल जा हथन। तूं केकर फेरा में हऽ । घरे चल जाऽ । मोहब्बत में वर्बाद मत होवऽ । ठीके कहल गेल हेय-

सब दिन न तोरिया फुलाई बाबू । सब घड़िआ ना सावन होई बाबू ।। सब दिन ना जवनिया रहई बाबू । सब दिन ना कोई जीअई बाबू ।। मानी लेहूँ बतिया मोर बाबू । बाट जोहत मइया-बाबा तोर बाबू ।। चली जा अब अप्पन घर बाबू । मानी लेहूँ बतिया हमार बाबू ॥ छोड़ि दऽ प्रेम के असरबा हो बाबू । दुनियाँ कोई न होथी केकरो हो बाबू ।।

जब एतना बात लोग राजा के बेटा के समझौलन तबहियों उनकर समझ में कुच्छो न आयल आउ मोहब्बत में पड़ के ऊ फिर कहे लगलन कि अगर ऊ लड़की से हमर सादी न होत तो दुआरी पर हम अप्पन जान दे देव। अपनन्हीन जाके लड़की के माय-बाप से कह के सादी करा देऊँ । हमरा तो अइसन अनजान से परेम हो गेल हे कि फतिंगा जर-जर के मरइत हेय आउ दीया के कोई फिकिरे न करे हेय ! ई सुन के लड़की के माय-बाप के भिरू जाके कुछ लोग सब हाल कह देलन । मेहतर जाके राजा के बेटा के समझावे लगल कि सरकार अपने राजा के बेटा राजकुमार हियऽ । हम जात के मेहतर नरक उठावे ओला आउ झांडू चलावे ओला ही। अपने हमर बेटी से सादी करबऽ तो अपने के भी एही सब काम करे पड़तवऽ । तू जात-भाई से निकालल जयवऽ । ई तरह मेहतर बड़ी समझौलक बाकि राजा के बेटा के कुच्छो न समझ में आयल ।

आखिर में बेचारा मेहतर का करे ? दूनों के सादी कर देलक। फिर तो दूनो में एतना परेम हो गेल कि एक के बिना दोसर के रहले ना जाय । दूनो खूब मउज-मस्ती से रहे लगलन । रहते-रहते एक दिन राजा के बेटा के अप्पन घर के इयाद पड़ल। ऊ अप्पन अउरत से कहलन कि अब हम घर जायल चाहइत ही। माय-बाप से कहऽ कि तोर बिदाई कर देथुन । जब लड़की माय-बाप से कहलक तो खुसी-खुसी से खूब धन-दउलत, गहना वोगैरह देके मेहतर अप्पन बेटी-दमाद के विदा कर देलक । राजा के बेटा अप्पन अउरत के लेके घरे चल देलन । जब घर के नजीक पहुँचलन तो ऊ सोचे लगलन कि हम तनियक सुन्नरता देख के कुल के दीया बुता देली। गाँव के लोग आउ माय-बाप देख के का कहतन ? एह से तो अच्छा हे कि ई अउरत के मार के कुआँ में डाल देऊँ आउ सब माल लेके घरे चल जाऊँ ! जब राह में ऊ अउरत सूत गेल तब राजा के बेटा ओकर गला में छुरी मार के ओकरा कुआँ में डाल देलन आउ सब धन लेके घरे पहुँचलन। माय-बाप कहलथिन कि बेटा हमनी बड़ी दिन से तोर आसरा देखइत हली । बेटा कहलन कि हमरा एगो बड़ी भारी राजा हीं नोकरी लग गेल हल । उहईं हम काम करइत हिअऽ । आज छुट्टी लेके आयल हिअऽ ।

अब राजा के बेटा छोड़ के ऊ अउरत पर आवऽ । ऊ औरत कुआँ में गिरल तो ओकरा में एगो लकड़ी के कुंडा गिरल हल, ओकरे पकड़ के ऊ बइठ गेल। एगो राही पानी खींचे ला बाल्टी डललक तो ऊ अउरत डोरी पकड़ लेलक । ऊ इन्सान बेचारा अउरत के बाहर निकाल के हाल पूछलक तो अउरत अप्पन पति के निरदोस बता के कहलक कि हम अप्पन मरद साथे ससुरारी जाइत हली कि इहाँ पर चोर सब धन ले लेलन आउ हमरा मार के कुआँ में डाल देलन । हमर स्वामी जी के का कयलन से कोई पता न हेय । ऊ राही अउरत के नइहर पहुँचा देलन । तो बाप, मतारी पूछलथिन कि ई हाल तोर कइसे भेलवऽ ? बेटिया पति के निरदोस बता के रहगीर से जे हाल कहलक हल से ही सब कह सुनौलक । बाप-माय रो-कलप के संतोस कर लेलन आउ बेटी के दवा-दारू कराके भला-चंगा करा लेलन ।

एन्ने राजा के बेटा कुछ दिन ससुरारी के धन से खूब मौज उड़ौलक आउ खतम हो गेल तो फिनो सोचलन कि झूठ बोल के उहाँ से धन लावे के चाहीं । कहब कि अपने के लड़की के लड़का होल हे, से ई सोंच के ऊ ससुरार चललन । पहुँचलन तो दरवाजे पर अप्पन अउरत के खड़ा देखलन। देख के उनकर हवास गूम हो गेल । ऊ थरथर काँपे लगलन कि हमर अउरत तो सब कह देलक होत । अउरत ई हाल देख के कहलक कि अपने चिंता मत करूँ। हम माय-बाप से कुछो न कहली हे । ऊ रोज अपने ला भगवान जी से मिनती कर हथ । ई सुन के राजा के बेटा बड़ी लजयलन आउ पछतावे लगलन ।

अपन अउरत के कहे पर जब घर में गेलन तब सास-ससुर दउड़ के उनका छाती से लगा लेलन। भगवान के मना के उनखा खूब खातिर बात करे लगलन । राजा के बेटा आराम से कुछ दिन रहलन। फिनो एक दिन अप्पन अउरत से कहलन कि हमरा अप्पन वतन पर अब जाय के मन करइत हे । अउरत कहलक कि हमरा तो अपने के साथ जाय में कोई डर न हे बाकि अइसन न कि अपने तबरिये ओला हाल बीच जंगल में कर देउँ ? तब राजा के बेटा कहलन कि हमरा तोरा आउ भगवान के कसम हे। अब ओइसन भूल के भी ना होई । तब मेहतर के बेटी माय-बाप से रोकसदी माँगलक आउ माय-बाप खुसी के साथ धन-दौलत दे के विदा कर देलन । दूनो जाते-जाते जंगल में पहुँच गेलन तो राजा के बेटा के मन में फिनो पहिले के पाप जाग गेलक । ई सोंच के राजा के बेटा अप्पन अउरत के छुरी से गोद के फेंक देलन आउ सब समान लेके घरे चल देलन ।

ऊ अउरत तड़प-तड़प के चिल्लाइत हलक। एही बीच में संयोग से ओकरे गाँव के एगो दोसर मेहतर जाइत हलक। अवाज सुनके देखलक तो चीन्ह गेल। लड़किया से पूछलक कि तोर ई हाल कइसे भेल ? तो ऊ सब हाल सच-सच बता देलक । ऊ ओकरा घरे पहुँचा देलक। ओकर माय-बाप ओकरा सेवा कर के भला-चंगा कर देलक । अब राजा के बेटा के कोई नाम न लेलक, न ऊ लड़किया उहाँ जाय के नाम लेलक । ठीके कहल गेल हे कि कोई अनजान मरद से कोई लड़की के परेम न करे के चाही, न तो मेहतर के लड़की के तरह दुःख भोगे के पड़ी।

Listening to this explanation, everyone understood that the king's son had fallen in love with a sweepress. Then everyone started advising him, saying, "Brother, look, you are the king's son, of a high lineage, and this girl belongs to the lowly family of a sweep. Do not get entangled in her love. Listen, my friend, wealth, youth, love, and guests come and go within days, and then they leave. Whom are you waiting for? Go back home. Don't ruin yourself in love. It is rightly said that—

Not every day will the flute be played, dear. Not every moment will it be monsoon, dear. Not every day will there be harvest, dear. Not every day will someone be alive, dear. Please accept my words, dear. Your father and mother are waiting for you, dear. Now go back to your own home, dear. Please take my words, dear. Leave behind the effects of love, dear. In this world, no one truly belongs to anyone, dear.

When everyone explained this to the king's son, he still couldn't understand anything, and lost in love, he said that if he could not marry that girl, he would give up his life at her doorstep. He would go and speak to the girl's parents to arrange the marriage. "I have fallen in love with her to the extent that a moth burns and dies, without caring for the lamp!" Upon hearing this, some people went to the girl’s parents and explained everything. The sweep started advising the king's son that, "Sir, you are the king's son, a royal prince. We, the sweepers, carry the burden of the hellish duties. If you marry our daughter, you will have to do such tasks too, and you will be ostracized from your caste." In this manner, the sweeper reasoned with him, but the king's son did not understand anything.

In the end, what could the poor sweeper do? He agreed to the marriage. Then both of them loved each other so much that they could not be without one another. They began to live happily together. As time passed, one day the king's son remembered his own home. He told his wife that he wanted to go home now. She conveyed this to her parents, who happily sent off their daughter and son-in-law with plenty of wealth and jewelry. The king's son took his wife and started heading home. When they reached near home, he thought about how he had fooled everyone by showing off beauty, and what would the villagers and parents say upon seeing him? It would be better if he killed his wife and threw her into the well and took all the valuables home! When they were on the way, his wife fell asleep. The king's son killed her with a knife and threw her into the well, then returned home with all the riches. His parents said, "Son, we have been waiting for you for a long time." The son replied, "I got a job from a great king. I have been working there. I came on holiday today."

Now, let us focus on the woman. When she fell into the well, a wooden post fell with her, and she held onto it to sit down. A passerby came by, drew some water with a bucket, and she grabbed the rope. The kind passerby pulled her out and asked about her situation. The woman explained that her husband was innocent and told that "I was going to my in-laws, but thieves seized all the riches and threw me into the well. I have no idea what they did to my husband." The passerby took her to her parental home. Her parents asked, "How did this happen to you?" The daughter explained everything as she overheard it from the traveler. The parents wept and mourned, and after treating their daughter with medicines, they made her healthy again.

Now, the king’s son spent some days enjoying the wealth from his in-laws, but when that finished, he thought about deceiving them again to bring more riches. He thought to say that he was the son of their daughter, so he went to his in-laws. When he reached there, he saw his wife standing at the door. Seeing her, he lost his senses. He started shaking, fearing that his wife would tell everything. The wife, seeing his condition, said, "Do not worry. I have told my parents nothing. I pray to God for you every day." Upon hearing this, the king’s son felt ashamed and started to regret.

When he returned home at the behest of his wife, his father-in-law and mother-in-law rushed to him and embraced him. They expressed their gratitude to God, conversing a lot with him. The king’s son stayed comfortably for a few days. However, one day he told his wife that he wanted to return to his homeland now. His wife said, "I have no fear going with you, but don’t throw me away in the middle of the jungle like that!" Then the king's son said, "I swear on you and God. I will never do such a thing again." The daughter of the sweeper then asked her parents for permission to leave, and her parents happily sent her off with wealth.

As they were going, they entered the woods, and the king’s son’s sinful thoughts resurfaced. Thinking this way, he betrayed his wife again, threw her with the knife, and left with all the belongings back home. The woman cried out in agony. Meanwhile, by coincidence, another sweeper from her village was passing by. Hearing her cries, he recognized her. He asked her, "How did this happen to you?" She truthfully told him the whole story. He took her back home, where her parents took care of her and made her well again. Now, nobody mentioned the king's son, nor did the girl take his name there. It is rightly said that no girl should fall in love with a stranger; otherwise, one would suffer like the daughter of the sweeper.
