देहात के एगो गाँव में एगो गिरहस्थ रहऽ हलन। उनकर लालमती नाम के चलाँक बेटी हल। ओकर सादी लइकाई में भे गेल हल। जवानी के दूरा पर पहुँच गेला पर भी ओकर गवना नऽ भेल हल। से बेटी अप्पन माय-बाप के घर-गिरहस्थी में सहजोग दे हल। परिवार सुख से जिनगी बितावऽ हल। हँसी-खुसी से भरल परिवार में कोई तरह के कभी कमी न बुझा हल। खाइत पीअइत, खेती-खरिहान में काम करइत, ओहनी हरमेंसे खुस रहऽ हलन।

एक रोज ऊ गिरहस्थ हर जोत के दुपहर से पहिलहीं घरे आ गेल, आउ नेहा-धोआ के खाय ला बइठल, ओने ओकर घरनी भी जाँता में गोहुम पीसे लगल। जाँता पीसते ओकरा अप्पन मरदाना से खाइते खनी मजाक करे ला सूझल, आउ ऊ एगो बुझौनियाँ में मजाक से बंधन बान्ह देलक-

सेह बइठल भार सबना के, कभी न बोले बानी। ई बुझौनियाँ बूझिहेंऽ सामी तब पीहेंऽ तू पानी।

खाइत खानी पानी पीये के मनाही से गिरहस्थ तनी सकपकायल, बाकि ओकरा बूझौनियाँ के मरम समझ में न आवे। से गिरहस्थ भी अप्पन घरनी के काम पर बुझौनिये में रोक लगा देलक। खाना पर बइठल गिरहस्थ बोलल-

घर-घर सबके पावल जा हे, रखल रहे भुँई सानी। ई बुझौनियाँ बूझिहँऽ धानी, तब डलिहऽ तू घानी॥

अब दूनो के काम रुक गेल। मरद पानी पीये ला बंद कैले हे, आउ औरत जाँता में घानी डाले ला बंद कर देलक हे। दूनों के ई हाल लालमती देखइत हल। ओकरा काम बंद देखके नऽ रहल गेल, आउ तुरते जबाब चुन के बोलल-

बप्पो बइठ्ठल, मइयो बड़ठल, हम हूँ बइठब जानी। जल्दी पीअऽ पानी बाबू, मइयो डाले घानी॥

बेटी के चलाकी भरल उत्तर से रुकल काम चालू हो गेल। ओहनी समझ गेलन कि बुझौनियाँ के अरथ पीढ़ा हे। कुछ दिन के बाद लालमती के गवना भेल, आउ ओकर मरद ओकरा रोसगद्दी करा के ले चलल, रस्ता में लालमती गोहुम के खेत में पशु-कंकाल के देखलक, जेकर आँख के गड़हा में एगो चिरईं अंडा देलक हल, आउ ओकरा से दू गो नन्हा-नन्हा चिरई के बच्चा फुदकइत हल। ई देख के लालमती अप्पन मरद से पूछलक-

आँख में दू पाँख बिआनी, जौ-गोहुम के नारी। ई मरम बतयब सामी, तब चलबो ससुरारी॥

सुनके ओकर मरद थम गेल, आउ दूनो आरी के किनार पर खड़ा हो गेलन। मरद भी चलाँक हल, बाकि ओकर मेहरारू के बात के मरम नऽ बता सकल। से ऊ औरत के स्वभाव के बात घुमा के कहलक-

कच्चा में कचकच, डम्भा में मीठा। कउन अइसन फल हे कि पकला में तीता॥

चतुर लालमती समझ गेल, कि हमर मरद भी समझदार हे। से ऊ आँख में चिरई के बच्चा देखा के मुस्कुरा देलक, आउ सीत पड़ल घास पर चलइत बुदबुदाइत आगे बढ़इत गेल-

अस्सी कोस के पोखरा, चौरासी कोस के घाट। ई पोखरा में बज्जर परे, कि चिरईं पिआसल जाय।

ई तरी हँसी-खुसी में ओहनी घरे पहुँच गेलन। अइसने दिन सब के बीते।

In a village in the countryside, there lived a householder. He had a clever daughter named Laalvati. She was married at a young age. Even after reaching the brink of youth, her wedding had not yet been completed. Therefore, the daughter helped her parents in their household work. The family lived a happy life. In a family filled with laughter and joy, there was never any sense of lack. They were content working in farming and enjoying their meals together.

One day, the householder returned home before noon from the field and sat down to eat. Meanwhile, his wife started grinding wheat in the grinding stone. While grinding, she thought of teasing her husband and playfully gave him a riddle: "All sit heavy, never do I speak."
"Solve this riddle, my dear, then you may drink water."

The householder, taken aback by the ban on drinking water while eating, was perplexed, but he couldn't grasp the meaning of the riddle. So, he also stopped his wife from her task. Sitting down to eat, the householder said:
"Everyone in the house is seated, the earth is covered."
"Solve this riddle, dear, then you may eat."

Now, both of their tasks were interrupted. The husband stopped drinking water, and the wife halted grinding the wheat. Laalvati observed their situation and couldn't hold back; she immediately came up with a response:
"Father is seated, and Mother is busy, I too shall sit."
"Quickly drink, dear father, while mother grinds."

Thanks to the daughter's clever response, the halted tasks resumed. They understood the meaning behind the riddles. After a few days, Laalvati's wedding took place, and her husband brought her home, passing by a field where she saw animal bones that had been found in the wheat field, and a bird had laid an egg in the eye socket, from which two tiny chicks were hopping about. Seeing this, Laalvati asked her husband:
"In the eye, two wings have sprouted, the female of the wheat."
"Tell me the meaning, husband, then I'll go to my in-laws."

Upon hearing this, her husband stopped, and they both stood at the edge of the field. He, too, was clever, but he couldn't decipher the meaning of his wife's words. So, he turned the conversation toward her nature and said:
"In raw, there's crunch, in fried, there's sweetness."
"What fruit is it that is bitter when ripe?"

Cunning Laalvati understood that her husband was also wise. So, she smiled at the sight of the bird's chicks in her eye and continued walking forward, mumbling:
"Eighty kos to the pond, eighty-four kos to the ghat."
"In this pond, the fish are abundant, for the birds have quench their thirst."

Thus, in this manner filled with laughter and joy, they both returned home. Such were the days passing by.
