The story revolves around a washerman, his dog, and a donkey. One night, after not being fed, the dog refuses to bark when a thief enters, believing it is not his concern. The donkey, feeling it is his duty, makes noise to alert the washerman. This noise wakes the washerman, who then punishes the donkey, thinking it is the cause of the disturbance. The dog then scorns the donkey for interfering in a role that wasn't his, emphasizing that everyone should stick to their own responsibilities to avoid trouble. The moral promotes the idea of knowing one's role and the consequences of meddling in others' tasks.

Once there was a washerman. He had a dog. One day, the washerman did not feed the dog. At night, the hungry dog sat at the door. The washerman’s donkey was also lying there, dozing off. When the thief entered, the donkey said to the dog, "You have become quite ungrateful. The master is here with a thief, and you are just sitting there!" The hungry dog was annoyed and said, "I won't bark. If there’s thievery, let it happen; it’s not my concern!" The donkey replied, "Well, I will make noise to alert the master." Then the dog said, "Listen, friend, it’s my job to be hungry; if you do your part, you will reap the rewards!" Still, the donkey could not help it. It started braying loudly. The washerman, who had been tossing and turning all day, finally fell into a deep sleep from exhaustion. The noise made by the donkey woke him up, and in annoyance, he picked up a stick and started hitting the donkey. Blows from the stick left the donkey half-beaten. The thieves, hearing the commotion, fled, but once the washerman fell asleep again, the dog said to the donkey, "Didn't I tell you before, that each should do their own work? If someone meddles in another's job, they will get a beating! Now it has become quiet, hasn’t it?" So, think wisely in your heart!
