Once a prince had a big feud with a Dom (a member of a lower caste). They both were gamblers. One day, the prince lost everything to the Dom. After losing the kingdom, he even put his sister on the line, and he lost her too. When the Dom demanded the prince’s sister instead of the kingdom, he said, "My sister is very fond of flowers. Just go and sit by the pond and watch the flowers! If she goes to pick flowers, then you can catch her!"
After this, the king asked his mother if he would win in the next game. She replied, "How can you, being the king's son, lose?" But the prince did not listen and took the oxen and went to the field. When it was time to drink water, the mother sent her daughter to bring snacks. The sister was preparing food for her brother when she saw the lotus flowers in the pond; she asked him about the flowers and went to the pond to get them. She went into the water, but after some time, she could not find any flowers, so she sang a song:
"Though I've come with a belly full of water, Brother,
Still, I could not find the lotus flower!"
The prince then called out to his sister, "Come here, sister! Come here!" The sister went waist-deep into the water, then found herself chest-deep, and finally knee-deep, still trying to catch the flowers, but she couldn’t grasp any. She said:
“Though I’ve come with my hands outstretched, Brother
Still, I could not find the lotus flower!”
Just then, sitting in the water, the Dom caught the prince's sister. When the prince returned home with the oxen, his mother asked his sister where she was. She replied that she had forgotten the way! A search began for her. Then the sister’s parrot flew to the tree by the pond and started to lament her misfortune:
“Where did she go, where did she go, the sister who lost?
Beating my chest in sorrow!”
Hearing this, the sister spoke from the water:
“What’s wrong, what has happened, dear parrot?
My brother lost, the Dom won!”
At that moment, the sister’s father-in-law was coming from the in-laws’ house. Hearing all this, he turned back and reported everything to the king. The king, along with his servants and attendants, went to the pond and began searching it. When the pond dried up, the king's daughter, the sister, and the Dom emerged. Then the Dom was buried in that same pond, and the sister went back to her husband at her in-laws’ house. There, she began to rule happily with her husband.
