Once upon a time, there was a king who had only one son. Many respectable families wished to marry their daughters to the prince, but the prince declared that he would marry only the girl who would give him five slaps every day. Upon hearing this, all the families backed away. One day a king came to ask the prince for marriage. When the prince stated his condition, the king returned home. The queen asked him if everything was alright with the boy. The king explained the whole situation and the terms set by the prince. In the midst of this conversation, their daughter spoke up, saying that she was ready to give five slaps every day. Thus, the marriage was arranged.
When the princess came to the palace, she went to her room at night. When she placed one slap on the prince's face, she remembered that he had asked for five. So she asked, "Why are you standing there?" The prince replied, "I had asked for five slaps!" To which the princess said, "On what basis? First, show me what you have earned; then I'll slap you!" Hearing this, the prince went out into the world to earn something.
On the way, he thought he would go to that kingdom where everything was wonderful. However, upon seeing the reality there, he found the king to be a liar. When the prince reached that kingdom, he saw a respected crane reciting the Ramayana. Ahead of it, he saw a river near the king’s village where monkeys were rowing boats. The prince thought this must be a genuinely truthful place. He went to the king and told him that his kingdom was very truthful. Hearing this, the king ordered his clerk to write it down. The prince explained the crane's and the monkeys' jobs, and the clerk noted it down. All three of them went to see the events after that. Upon arriving there, they found everything to be false. When they returned, the prince was punished. He was yoked to a tailor's oil press. While working there, a soapberry tree fell into his oxen's yoke, and his beard and mustache grew like a bull's.
Meanwhile, the princess had a dream one night regarding all these happenings, and she told her father that she wanted to go on a pilgrimage and needed some money, a dog, and a hawk. The queen took all these things and went to that kingdom. There, she indeed found the crane reading the Ramayana. She placed the hawk nearby so that the crane wouldn’t escape. Further ahead, she saw the monkeys rowing the boat and placed the dog there, ensuring that no monkeys would escape either.
The queen then went to the king of that kingdom and told him that his land was indeed truthful. In response, the king had his clerk write down the entire story, and upon checking, all three turned out to be correct. Upon seeing this, the king wanted to bestow a reward. Remembering her dream, the queen requested the king to set free the man who was yoked in the oil press. The king granted her this request. The queen saw him looking like a human and took him to a market. After getting him groomed and washed, she tied his locks in his scarf. The queen then clothed him in different attire, gave him some money, and left him there, returning home with the dog and the hawk.
A few days later, the prince also returned to his palace. At night, when he went to his room, he remembered he had asked for five slaps. The queen asked, "Why are you standing there?" To which the prince replied, "I had a condition of receiving five slaps!" Then the queen took out a scarf from her bag and asked, "Whose scarf is this?" She opened it to reveal, "On this earnings, you want slaps? And look at your appearance as well!" Then the prince fell unconscious and, after a while, regained his senses. From that day onward, the prince lived happily and spent his days joyfully.
